Proven, Clinical, Results.
The latest in treatment technology, developed and used in elite sport - is now available to you at MSK Sports Injury Clinic.
Shockwave has become increasingly popular in NHS and sporting settings as an effective treatment to manage and accelerate the healing of injuries.
We have invested in the market-leading shockwave therapy machine which helps to reduce symptoms of chronic soft tissue problems. Shockwave is used by Premier League football clubs such as Newcastle United and through professional sport in the English Institute of Sport, UK Athletics & Welsh Rugby Union.
Research results are key in proving a treatment works, management of Plantar Fasciitis with Shockwave shows that 7 out of 10 people see benefit from treatment (NHS) and various research papers are widely reporting up to 80% success rate with treatment with shockwave therapy.
Shockwave has its best effect on the body’s most stubborn problems such as plantar fasciitis and chronic tendinopathies.
If you have been struggling to turn a corner with your problem – this is your solution.
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Radial Shockwave Therapy – is a non-invasive treatment which involves the application of non audible soundwaves to the injured area to help improve healing.
There are other forms of sound wave-based treatments on the market which have proven over time to be low in effect. What makes Shockwave different is that its soundwaves are lower in frequency than any other type of therapy.
Shockwave has a long history, first introduced in the 1950s for use in the medical world – by the 1970's it was being used to help break down kidney stones. The 1980s saw it being used for the management of orthopaedic disorders such as non-healing bones and tendinopathies. Due to the progression of technology, the 1990s showed that shockwave’s latest models could treat heel spur problems and elbow pain.
There has been much advancement in Shockwave technology that it now stands as a pioneering treatment for stubborn soft tissue problems with positive results.

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy
If you have ever had a chronic problem such as tendon pain, plantar fasciitis or rotator cuff problems then you will know the long term, uncomfortable struggle you may have had with your symptoms.
Endlessly hoping that your pain will reduce and that your function will go back to normal. This is where Shockwave comes in. Shockwave helps to kick start recovery from deep-set injuries where improvement seemed hopeless.
Shockwave treatment can reduce your pain levels so that you can start to focus on recovery and perform your simple day to day tasks without having to think twice about them.
Shockwave can increase your healing times versus traditional methods such as rehabilitation and manual therapy on its own. Due to its ability to break down tissue, reduce pain and helping regenerate tissue.
It’s no secret that as we age our soft tissues and joints become more sensitive and this can lead to pain development – maintenance of our joints and soft tissue strength is vital to remaining fit and healthy as we age.
Loss of joint range of movement and muscle mass are 2 of the main indicators of how we age – if we remain mobile and relatively strong – our quality of life will remain. Several soft tissue problems like tendinopathies of the knees, hips and shoulders can directly impact our day to day function due to weakness, pain and loss of flexibility.
Shockwave can help you to maintain your lifestyle and improve your soft tissue health as you age – which is what everyone would like! Breaking down of any calcific deposit which may restrict your movement and improving your tendons which help you maintain your strength and move freely.

What To Expect During Your Treatment
Following a pre-treatment questionnaire and discussion regarding the goals of your treatment, our shockwave sessions last approximately 30 minutes – this is due to the treatment protocols used and how many shocks can be administered are limited in one session. A shockwave applicator/probe will be applied to the area and you will be administered with the shockwaves.
You will need more than one session for Shockwave to be effective, typically 3 to 5 treatments, each session being completed 3-10 days apart. This is to make the treatment effective but also to make it safe for you. Our protocols are backed by research and by client results – you will be advised on the best way to approach your shockwave treatment by one of our experienced clinicians.
At MSK Sports Injury Clinic Newcastle - we have an industry-leading Venn Healthcare STORZ MP50 ULTRA Shockwave therapy machine. This machine is the same unit found in professional sports clubs and organisations around the country and world, it is considered a gold standard in shockwave therapy.
The benefits of this treatment depend on what type of setting is used, the level of shockwave administered and the goal of your therapy.
Destruction of tissue - high levels – focused on breaking down calcific build-up – common in the rotator cuff and shoulder pain.
Increased Healing – middle levels – focuses on healing and pain relief – useful for helping tissue regenerate and heal whilst also helping to manage your pain levels.
Decrease pain – low levels – if you are at an extremely painful stage of your injury – this can be used to simply manage pain – this can be the first step on the way to recovery for many when pain reduces we can typically do more and become comfortable.

How Will You Feel After Treatment?
Despite feeling some mild discomfort during the treatment – you will feel immediate pain relief following the end of the session.
Despite immediate relief – which is a positive – you will not feel total recovery from just one session. This will be more noticeable after you have completed a course of treatment which involves multiple sessions. Shockwave requires specialist rehab exercises to be performed alongside treatment for your specific problem to stand the best chances of recovery.
As the injured tissue is treated and the healing process begins – there will be some weakness and deconditioning of the tissue as it has not been used properly for a prolonged period. Treatment helps to bring the injured area back to life – and then you need to give it a helping hand with gentle exercises for it to return to its best.
It is advisable after treatment that you do not perform any strenuous tasks or heavy lifting/exercise.
There may be in some instances, redness of the skin, mild swelling, numbness and headache after treatment – however, this will be short-lived and should reside within 24 hours.
