MSK Sports Injury Clinic now offers the clinically proven Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) treatment to our patients. Shockwave Therapy is no longer the preserve of the sporting elite! It has become widely accepted in clinical practice for the treatment of chronic soft tissue injuries. With a clinically proven success rate of between 70-80%, this treatment is very much in demand and is used by high profile professional sports team such as Newcastle United Football Club.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Radial Shockwave therapy sends high-energy short pulses into the chronically injured tissue causing a micro trauma, which increases blood flow, has an analgesic effect and stimulates the process of tissue repair by causing an inflammatory response. This facilitates injury rehabilitation by relieving pain, increasing mobility and accelerating the healing process through natural mechanisms along with remodeling damaged and dysfunctional tissue.

Many studies exist on the efficacy of Shockwave Therapy that have been reviewed and accepted by NICE (UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence)

Here at MSK Sports Injury Clinic we use the industry leading VENN Healthcare, Storz Medical MP50 Shockwave machine.

Is Shockwave Therapy Clinically Proven?

Absolutely! Shockwave Therapy is clinically proven and covered by most private health insurers. It is also recognised by the top orthopaedic hospitals in the UK and used by high profile professional sports bodies such as the English Institute of Sport, UK Athletics, Welsh Rugby Union and many Premiere League football clubs.

Shockwave Therapy has a clinically proven success rate of between 70-80%.

What To Expect During Your Treatment

For optimum results, clinical experts recommend 3 to 5 treatments of Shockwave Therapy, each session being completed 3-10 days apart. There is no need for any anesthesia but some slight discomfort may be experienced during the treatment which is completely normal. It only lasts a few minutes and then you will feel the benefit of pain relief immediately afterwards. We'll also provide you with a bespoke rehabilitation exercise plan to follow at home during the course of the treatment, in order for the injured tissue to repair, regenerate and strengthen. Any heavy activity using the effected limb should be avoided for 48 hours following each treatment session.

You may also experience some of the following:

  • Local skin redness
  • Numbness
  • Mild discomfort
  • Swelling
  • Headaches following upper limb treatment
