What is Kinesiology Taping?
Kinesiology taping, also know as K-taping, is an elastic therapeutic tape used to prevent and manage sporting injuries. By applying the tape to a problematic or painful area it facilitates the natural healing process of the body’s tissues. The application of the tape helps to reduce pain whilst providing support and stability to the joint and muscles, without restricting range of movement due to its elastic properties.
How does Kinesiology Tape work?
There are many brands of K-tape which vary in design, but they all work in the same way, regardless of the colour you choose! The super adhesive and stretchy fabric of the tape means that it moves with the skin to allow functional movement, rather than restrict it, and can remain on the skin for a number of days. When applying the K-tape it creates a decompression force on the skin and the tissues beneath, and so in a sense pulls the tissues apart to make space between them rather than pushing down or compressing them. This reduces the amount of pressure on the nerve endings which eases the sense of pain we experience, allowing better movement of the layers of tissue, encouraging blood flow for tissue repair, reducing signs of swelling, and re-educating your body to follow corrective movement patterns.
