Helping Kids Grow Without the Ouch
From Aches to Action – Growing Pains Made Easy
Growing pains are a common part of childhood, especially during times of rapid development. These aches—often felt in the legs, knees, or thighs—can disrupt sleep, limit play, and cause concern for both children and their parents. While growing pains are typically harmless, they can still be uncomfortable and affect a child’s movement and confidence.
Children experiencing growing pains often report a dull, aching discomfort typically felt in the muscles of the legs—most commonly in the thighs, calves, or behind the knees. The pain usually occurs in both legs and tends to come and go, often appearing in the late afternoon or evening, and may even wake the child during the night. It is not associated with joint swelling, redness, or limping, and children are usually pain-free during the day. While the exact cause is unknown, growing pains are thought to be related to muscle fatigue from increased activity during growth spurts. They are most common in children between the ages of 3 and 12 and are not usually linked to any underlying medical condition.
At MSK Sports Injury Clinic, we specialise in Paediatrics soft tissue therapy that helps ease the discomfort of growing pains. Our team uses gentle, evidence-based techniques to reduce muscle tightness, improve flexibility, and promote healthy movement patterns. We also educate parents and children on stretches, posture, and activities to manage symptoms at home.
With a caring approach and a focus on fun, we help your child stay active, confident, and pain-free—so they can keep growing, exploring, and thriving.
