The Importance of Rehabilitation in Recovery – 4 main goals when planning a patients rehab plan
Rehabilitation is a key aspect of the recovery process & is vital in restoring a patient to full functional health. Whilst we’d love to solve all issues during the treatment, for a full recovery, you need to be consistent with rehabilitation.
A good practitioner (*cough* Like us *cough*) will personally prescribe a specific set of exercises for each of their patients. It is integral that the exercises are focussed on the needs of the patient & severity of the injury.
A successful rehabilitation program will:
- Aid the recovery process
- Prevent re-injury
- Restore full function
- Restore muscle strength
- Increase flexibility
- Guide the patient back to sport specific exercise or everyday functionality
A lot of practitioners wait too long to begin the rehabilitation process. With most injuries, rehabilitation can begin during the R.I.C.E protocol. As a guide, with most injuries you can follow the 4 steps below.
- Swelling Control & Pain Reduction
Immediately after injury, your body’s natural response will cause inflammation & pain around the injured site. As mentioned previously, gentle range of motion exercises are recommended, however these should always be guided by pain.
- Recover Range Of Motion
As the injury begins to heal, the rehabilitation process can gradually move onto more advanced range of motion exercises. After injury, it is normal to lose flexibility & full range of motion of the affected area.
- Recover Your Strength / Reduce Injury Risk
We can’t type this loud enough. This is one of the really important areas! Restoring your strength. After injury, it is vital that you restore the injured area to above pre-injury strength levels. This is where re-injury prevention comes into play. We want to make the injured area stronger than what it was before.
- Restoring Function
This can be sports specific or simply returning yourself back to everyday activities. We want to make sure the injured area is functioning at 100% with no restrictions.

The scope for rehabilitation covers a broad range of injuries. If you are suffering from any of the below conditions, you could benefit from specific injury rehabilitation:
- Lower back pain
- Neck pain
- Muscle strains
- Shoulder impingement
- Rotator Cuff Injuries
- Shin Splints
- Achilles Tendinitis
- Knee Conditions
- Post Surgery Recovery
