Plantar Fasciitis – Think Hands on Treatment Before Injection
People come in to MSK Therapy each day suffering from foot pain and time and time again I hear clients say that they have been advised to get injections to help with the condition. At no means am I saying this is incorrect but what I am saying is that this should be your last option as this injection causes trauma to the body and over time weakens the ligament. If you have not had a Therapist knuckles in the bottom of your foot and jumping of the treatment table then you have not tried to fixed the problem.
Plantar Fasciitis is the most common cause of foot pain and can be unbearable in some cases. They describe the pain like tooth ache in the foot and it much worse in the morning when waking up due to the healing process over night happening which tightens up the fascia ligament.
What is Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar Fasciitis is the inflammation of the ligament that runs along the bottom of your foot and connects your heel to your toes. When feeling the bottom of your foot it is the think band running along the sole of your foot. This inflammation causes a stabbing like pain in the foot and causes pain in the heel.
So what causes the Plantar Fasciitis?
The Plantar fascia ligament is a shock absorbing ligament for the bottom of your foot and when this get under too much stress just like any ligament or muscle, small tear happen in the facia. This tearing and repetitive stretching causes the facia to become irritate and inflamed.
Other factors which cause or will not help Plantar Fasciitis
— Tight Calf Muscle
— Tight Achilles Tendon
— Tight Soleus Muscle
— Tight muscles cause the ankle joint to become less mobile which will put more stress through the Plantar fascia
— Weak muscles in the foot will put too much pressure through the Plantar Faciitis
Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis
Here at MSK Therapy we use a hands on approach to treating Plantar Facia. I personally have had so many people come to me for treatment after they have been advised to have cortisone injections in the Plantar Fascia without even trying hands on treatment. Having an injection is trauma to the body and if we can we want to avoid that. Doctors usually recommend no more than three injections in the same area in the space of 12 months. A repetitive injection in one area over time weakens the area which is injected.
Primary treatment goal
— Deep tissue massage to relax the calf and soleus muscles
— Deep tissue massage to relax the achilles tendon
— Deep tissue massage on the bottom of the foot to relax the fascia ligament and to stimulate tissue healing of the facia ligament
— Strap support for the facia ligament to give it time to heal.
— Stretching of the calf and soleus
— Ice your foot (best way to do this is to freeze a small bottle of water and once frozen apply slight pressure and roll this on the bottom of your foot)
EACH CLIENT THAT HAS COME TO ME AT MSK SPORTS INJURY CLINIC THAT GOT ADVISED TO GET INJECTIONS DO NOT END UP GETTING INJECTIONS
“I had suffered with plantar fasciitis for many years and was told by previous physiotherapists that my case was chronic and could not be cured. After only 1 treatment from MSK I was pain free the next morning which is something I hadn’t experienced in years. The problem was fully cured after a very short amount of treatments so I would recommend MSK not only for treatments, but for second opinions as well as that would have had me back to running and physical activity straight away”
“I was recommended by a friend to MSK, having already seen 3 other therapists i was sceptic to whether it would be worth it, i was suffering from PF, after 2 treatments i am already feeling the benefits, the after care is like no other i have received either, very genuine guy. highly recommended.”
